Asian Games 2018: Saurabh Chaudhary bags Gold, Abhishek Verma clinches Bronze in Men’s 10m Air Pistol

Saurabh Chaudhary and Abhishek Verma added to India’s medals tally as they bagged Gold and Bronze medals, respectively, in Men’s 10m Air Pistol event on Day 3. Chaudhary was up against Matsuda in the battle for Gold and while the Japanese shot 10.3 in his final attempt, the Indian hit 10.4 to get a gold. Sourabh had shot a total of 240.7, which is also a Games Record, to finish above Japan’s Tomoyuki Matsuda, while Abhishek settled for a bronze his total points tally reading 219.3.

Saurabh gets India’s third gold at the Asian Games 2018. This is the country’s sixth medal overall and fourth medal in shooting. Earlier, Saurabh had won a Gold medal at the Youth Olympics Games and had also claimed a junior world record at Asia Youth Olympics Games qualification event.

“Superb show by young Saurabh !! Many many Congratulations. We must pledge support to these young athletes for a sustained period of time irrespective of results.  They have the ingredients for Olympic success. Needs persistent support irrespective,” the legendary Abhinav Bindra tweeted on Saurabh’s achievement.

The two teenagers proved their medal credentials by reaching the finals as with first and sixth positions. While Chaudhary shot 99, 99, 93, 98, 98, and 99 in six rounds to finish first a total of 586, Abhishek wasn’t far behind with scores of 580 with 96, 97, 95, 96, 97, and 99 in finishing sixth.

Shooting has been one of the most dominant sports for India at the Asian Games. Earlier, Apurvi Chandela and Ravi Kumar had opened India’s medals account in shooting with a bronze in 10m Air Rifle Team event. Deepak Kumar, meanwhile, earned his first medal at a major event by bagging a silver in the 10m Air Rifle individual event. The 18-year old Lakshay was clinical too in as he finished second to clinch a silver medal in Men’s Trap event.
