5 Children Engaged in Burning of COVID-19 Affected Dead Bodies Rescued from Varanasi

On 19 May 2021 BBA State Coordinator in Uttar Pradesh received an e- article on children being engaged as labourers in burning dead bodies of Covid-19 affected people in Varanasi. Upon reading this article, BBA State Coordinator wrote a letter to DCPO Varanasi and copied it to SCPCR and DM Varanasi for their information and action.

After various follow up with the DCPO office when no action was taken till 26 May 2021, without any delay BBA State Coordinator wrote a letter to SCPCR for taking cognizance and for issuing notice for rescue and rehabilitation of such children to the concerned authorities, which on 27 May 2021, issued a notice to SSP Varanasi, copying to DM Varanasi for doing the needful along with reporting in next 10 days.

After 45 days of rigorous follow-up and 3 letters written by the BBA State Coordinator, 5 children were rescued by Varanasi Police on 3 July 2021. All of these children were found to be hailing from West Bengal and were living in a temporary shelter with their relatives near Harishchandra Ghat of Varanasi. Presently all children are being taken care of in Child Care Institutions as per the orders of CWC.
