Stripped of their dignity and robbed of their rights, at least six minor girls were paraded naked and made to go begging door-to door to appease the God of rain in nondescript Baniya village of Damoh district of Madhya Pradesh.

Taking immediate cognisance of this horrific incident, Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA) wrote to the state police demanding immediate action against the accused. The district police has now written to BBA and informed that FIR has been registered eight accused in the case under multiple sections of IPC and the POCSO Act as well.

The accused were not only behind this incident but also filmed the entire episode on their mobile phones following which the disturbing video went viral. Further investigation is on in the case.

The incident happened on September 5 when the young girls were stripped naked and made to walk with a wooden shaft on their shoulders with a frog tied to it. Women accompanying the children sang hymns to appease the God of rain and walked with them as the children were forced to go door-to-door asking for pulses, flour and cereals as per prevailing custom.

The food items collected this way were donated to a community kitchen in front of the village temple as the belief is this ritual would bring about ample rain to the village.

The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) also sought a report from the Damoh district administration about this incident.
