In a massive crackdown against child labour, Bachpan Bachao Andolan’s intervention resulted in the rescue of 14 children from motorcycle and car repair shops in Delhi’s Seemapuri area.
The children had been working under extremely unhygienic conditions in the shops for about 12-14 hours a day for a measly sum of Rs 20-50 a week. They belong to the states of Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
The rescue operation was led by the SDM Seemapuri in collaboration with the Labour Department, local police, civil defense and team of BBA. Seven shops have been sealed by the SDM.
Identification of the children was done by the BBA team and the complaint regarding the same was given to the SDM and a rescue operation was planned.
In the SDM order, relevant sections under Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act 1986 (CLPRA), Bonded Labour System Abolition Act and trafficking have been included. Registration of FIR is under process.
The children have been sent to the local Child Care Institute after COVID-19 test.
